The WordPress Plugin Directory states that they have 23,637 plugins with 414,297,486 downloads, and counting. Chances are that when you are looking for WordPress social share buttons you are going to be given a multitude of choices. So now what do you do? Well, I’m about to tell you.
The Best WordPress Social Share Buttons Plugin
My favorite WordPress social share buttons plugin is the Social Sharing Toolkit by Marijn Rongen. This WordPress plugin is a powerhouse of options and is very user friendly. As far as I’m concerned this should be one of the first WP plugins you install.
WordPress social share buttons are mandatory for any blog or website that wants to have traffic to their site. I’m guessing that means you. You need to make it easy for people to share your content. It needs to be prominent on every post and/or page and user friendly for those wanting to share your outstanding content.
I’ve tried a few different WordPress social share buttons over the last few years. I’ve found that the Social Sharing Toolkit has absolutely everything I need…and more. It is installed on this website so be sure to try it out by sharing this post.
Installing the Social Sharing Toolkit
The ease of installing WP plugins carries on with this plugin. But we’ll start from the beginning for any newbies out there. Click on the images to enlarge if needed.
Go to your WordPress dashboard and hover over Plugins. In the drop-down click “Add New”.
Once on the plugin page in the search area type in “social sharing toolkit” and hit “Search Plugins.”
Your first choice of plugins should be the correct one. Simply click on “Install Now” and WordPress will take over and install the plugin for you. Easy Peasy!
After the installation is complete you must activate the plugin. Give WordPress a minute (took me only a few seconds) to set things in motion and activate the WordPress social share buttons.
After activation you will be taken back to the list of all your WordPress plugins. Your new WordPress social share buttons will be sitting right there in your list. You can click on settings from here or go to “Settings” in the WP navigation and you will see it in the drop-down and can click from there.
Now that you are in the settings section you can choose what, where , and how you want your WordPress social share buttons to appear. You have many choices. There is a large variety of social media types to choose from:
- and many more
You can also choose if you want the count displayed of how many people have shared your content. You can also choose if you want your WordPress social share buttons on the top, bottom, or both. I, personally, like them on the top and the bottom. Be sure to check at least one option. Choose if you want them on posts and pages or just one. When setting which social media icons you want be sure to check next to them to activate. Someone I know very intimately (I swear it’s not me) set the type of button but forgot to check the box and then wondered why it wasn’t working.
Advanced Settings for WordPress Social Share Buttons
This is one plugin where you should really use the advanced settings. There is a handy dandy section there that lets you use Bitly url shortening for the tweet button. If you’ve ever tried to tweet a link before and found that an extra long link took up almost all of your Twitter characters you know exactly what I’m talking about. Shortening the URL with bit.ly is a godsend for this. It is super simple to set up bit.ly and get your bit.ly API key. You may also set up Pinterest and OpenGraph settings in the Advanced Settings.
Now that you have the Social Sharing Toolkit installed and ready to go let us know in the comment section below what social media you chose to use for your WordPress social share buttons. If you have any question or comments just enter them in the comments section too. We’re here to help!
